Nathan Durrance

Nathan has over 18 years of intellectual-property experience, focusing on three areas: (1) litigation, (2) patent-portfolio analysis, and (3) patent prosecution—obtaining patents.

His intellectual-property litigation experience includes acting as lead counsel in federal courts around the country, where he has won patent, copyright, trademark, and trade-secret jury trials. Nathan also represents clients in disputes before the International Trade Commission (ITC). Before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, Nathan has won cancelation of opposing-party trademarks, and successfully defended against cancelation of his own clients’ marks. Before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), Nathan has successfully appealed adverse examiner decisions and won post-issuance challenges to patents for his clients.won post-issuance challenges to patents for his clients.

In patent-portfolio analysis, Nathan has overseen due diligence for almost a billion dollars in patent sales and acquisitions, including Intel’s purchase of the Real Networks patent portfolio. He also advises clients in technology transfers and licensing, and executing market clearances for consumer products.

Nathan has obtained patents for his clients in almost every technology field, including smartphones, wireless devices, and communication protocols; semiconductor design and fabrication; Internet traffic equipment and server design; application delivery controllers (ADCs); secure Internet routing; cloud computing; e-commerce; and medical devices. Nathan also advises his clients on best practices for Post Grant Reviews (PGRs) and Inter Partes Reviews (IPRs) under the America Invents Act (AIA).

Nathan joins Newman Du Wors Durrance after five years at Perkins Coie, one of the largest firms in the country, where he helped start its global patent-portfolio analysis and valuation practice. He also helped Perkins become the #1 ranked patent legal department in the United States, according to U.S. News and World Reports.

Nathan is a Stanford educated engineer, where he was a Ph.D. fellow. He graduated with honors (Order of the Coif) from U.C. Berkeley (Boalt Hall), one of the top 10 rated law schools in the country.
